Fetus (who is actually a fetus inside a mechanical suit, complete with top hat and monocle). %Gallery-103429%It's as basic as it gets: Meat Boy must traverse perilous traps and deadly landscapes in order to save Bandage Girl from the evil Dr. It's also one of the best games I've played this year. I can only thank my lucky stars that my wife wasn't around to witness the frequency, volume and general ferocity of the swears that shook the living room walls. I've been maimed, beaten, crushed, devoured, stabbed, sliced and otherwise disfigured over, and over, and over again.
Super Meat Boy is tough, as tough as the toughest nails in the toughest universe.
As of this writing, I have died 1,792 times and several hundred of those lives - at least - were spent trying to conquer the last level. Having completed the story (but not nearly all of the levels) of Super Meat Boy, I can soundly declare that it trumps them all. I've brought down the likes of Earthworm Jim, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ninja Gaiden (2004), Mega Man 9 and many others without much trouble and only the occasional spurt of profanity. It%26rsquo s the best deal in gaming since the Orange Box.There was a time when I thought I was pretty good at video games.

Furthermore, there%26rsquo s the free DLC titled Teh Internets that%26rsquo s coming down the line. And after you beat the main game, the truly crazy/awesome can take on the Dark World challenges, search for the hidden warp zones, or collect items to unlock badass hidden characters like a Castle Crasher and Tim from Braid. If you buy it in the first 30 days it%26rsquo s only 800 MS points ($10) and for that you get at least 8-10 hours of play, which is more you get from some $60 games (and considerably more than Sonic 4 Episode I gives you for $15). This game is also one of the best bangs for your buck on XBLA. Most deaths go like this: jump, fall, killed on saw blade, %26ldquo god damn it,%26rdquo immediate respawn, %26ldquo alright, this time I%26rsquo ve got it.%26rdquo And when you finally beat a stage they show a replay of all your attempts at once, making for a pretty entertaining montage. But since the time between death and respawn is about one second, you never have to wallow in your failure. And probably a third of that was in the insanely, desperately hard final six stages.
Looking at my death count in the stats page, I died about 3000 times total beating the 110 levels in the main game.

Seems simple enough right?Īnd you will die a lot looking for that path, but trial and error is a huge part of the game. Fetus shows up and takes her to the next stage, and the process is repeated, say, 100 times. Once you finally traverse the perilous area and get to Bandage Girl, Dr. Most times you can see the goal (your girlfriend) and then you try your best to figure out how you are going to run and jump to get over to the fair lady.
Fetus, and in how the levels are presented to you.Įach level is a new problem you're dropped into. Super Meat Boy%26rsquo s biggest influence seems to be Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, in both the set-up of Meat Boy constantly saving his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the mega-a$$hole Dr. It harkens back to the days of classic 8 and 16-bit games, like Ghost %26lsquo n%26rsquo Goblins, Castlevania, and Super Mario, when 2D platformers were expected to be very challenging but in a rewarding way.
